Magic Mike XXL – Movie Review

The boys are back in town; this time BIGGER, XXL in fact. Returning to our screens for the much anticipated sequel to Magic Mike are Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Adam Rodriguez, Kevin Nash and Joe Manganiello.  Its full on man candy and set three years after Magic Mike bowed out of The Tampa Kings.  Dallas (Matthew McConaughey) has skipped town to pursue a career elsewhere and the boys are left without a leader. Reunited with Mike they hit the road to Myrtle Beach to take part in a stripper convention.   That seems like a totally acceptable plot to me.

Expect, good music, lots of pecs, some seriously suggestive dance routines and enough XXL performances to dampen knickers AND boxers for many a man and woman across the country.  In the main its entertaining and even pokes fun at itself quite a few times. Watch out for the vampire references from Joe Manganiello and a particularly funny Backstreet Boys inspired dance routine.

The girls are also out in force in the sequel with the addition of Elizabeth Banks, Andie MacDowell and Jada Pinkett Smith who balance out the man heavy line up.

Magic Mike XXL is very much a visual feast. Its light-hearted, doesn’t take itself too seriously and objectifies men, but no one really minds.  Oscars, Academy awards or anything resembling a nod for a serious and gripping story is not what this movie is about, its all about flesh and fun.  There is however a heartwarming underlying story of friendship running through the movie. The ladies and the man lovers (includes me) are going to like it. I’ll give it 3 out of 5 for the visuals. Check out the trailer below.  Magic Mike XXL is in cinemas Friday July 3rd.
