Max – Movie Review

So who doesn’t love a movie about a lovable dog who saves the day.  We have had Lassie, Benji and the Littlest Hobo and loved them all.  Now mans best friend has been given military training, a slightly edgy temperament and he is called Max.

Kyle Wincott (Robbie Amell) is serving in Afghanistan with his military dog Max when he is killed in action.  Max his faithful dog suffers from a form of post traumatic stress (yes apparently dogs get it).  Unwilling to respond to any other handlers, Max is due to be put down. Step forward Kyle’s grieving mother Pamela (Lauren Graham – The Gilmore Girls), father Ray (Thomas Hayden Church – Sideways) and brother Justin (Josh Wiggins) who are very much of the ‘we look after our own’ camp.

To add a little action and adventure to the seemingly simple story of ‘family inherits dog’, Kyle’s military buddy Tyler turns up to pay his respects. Max takes an instant dislike to him and raises some family eyebrows.  Tyler in turn spins a story to Ray about Max attacking Kyle in the field and causing his death. Ray now has someone to blame for his son’s death and turns his anger to Max.  Justin the surly teen has meanwhile formed a bond with Max and catches his father in the process of trying to take Max from his cage and he lives to fight another day.

Without giving away too much of the story, Tyler is not all he seems and is involved in some corrupt activities which lead to Ray being kidnapped.  If only there was a trusty canine who could help Justin and this two friends find his Dad, foil the crime and save the day. Max also manages to bring the family together again and help them begin to heal after the loss of Kyle.

I’m giving it 3.5 out of 5 for being a family friendly story that might even make you shed a tear. Check out the trailer for Max below.
