A Perfect Port from Maynards

Until recently I had never known the pleasures of port. I would hear the name and usually picture old men drinking it at Christmas. With that in mind, I guess it was fitting that my first drop of port was at a Christmas wines preview for Aldi. It took place in Fire Restaurant on Dawson Street and guests were invited to work their way through a variety of wines, champagnes, Prosecco, beers and of course a selection of port from Maynards.MAYNARD's%20Logo

I had some interesting chats with some more experienced port drinkers on the night who were happy to share their knowledge and love of it with me. Here’s a run down of the ports on offer.

*As I’m new to the world of port, for a more informed rundown I’ve included where relevant some producers notes.

First was the 10 year old aged Tawny. €13.99 for 75cl with 20%ABV. A blend of Tinta Roriz, Touruga Fanca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Barroca.  Aromas of dried fruits, honey and toffee and tastes of fig and jam. It has a smooth taste and pairs well with a selection of cheese.

Next up was the late bottled vintage (LBV) 2011 port. Priced at €12.99 for 75cl with 20%ABV. A blend of Tinta Roriz, Touruga Fanca, Touriga Nacional and Tina Barroca. Fruity aromas and black fruit tastes with high tannins.  Less smooth than the other two and best decanted I’m told.  Try it with a selection of cheese.

The ‘Grandad’.  I think it is safe to say, if you have never drank port and you start with this one first then you won’t be disappointed. This is one senior citizen who has settled perfectly into his old age.  Priced at €49.99 for 75cl with 20%ABV, it’s a blend of Tinta Roriz, Touruga Fanca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca and Tina Amarela.  It was smooth as silk, gently warming with aromas of nuts, coffee and cinnamon. Taste wise its toasted nuts, chocolate and I’m sure there was a little spice in the after taste.

It also comes in a gorgeous wooden box should you choose to give it as a festive gift. Try it with dark chocolate desserts or of course on its own. After tasting this, I can honestly say that I loved it and will be investing in a bottle as a gift to myself.

Note: while I was invited to the tasting as a guest I was not asked to write about or promote what was on offer.  As someone new to tasting port I found it extremely interesting and am happy to share my own views on it here.
