The Accountant – Movie Review

The Accountant is a fresh take on the traditional Hollywood blockbuster.

Christian Wolfe (Ben Affleck) is The Accountant. A mathematical savant who lives a life of relative solitude. Preferring numbers to people he has uncooked the books of a string of high-profile crime lords. A small town accounting firm called ZZZ provides his cover and until now no one has questioned it.

He is like Jason Bourne with a calculator and a briefcase

Through a series of flashbacks to his childhood we discover Christian was diagnosed with autism. His father a military officer believes in tough love. He raises Christian and his brother to overcome obstacles, never back down and always be prepared for what life throws at you. Christian is no ordinary accountant. He is like Jason Bourne with a calculator and a briefcase.

While he  goes about his business, Raymond King (J.K. Simmons) of the Treasury Departments financial crimes unit is working on tracking him down. A task made all the more difficult by a mysterious accomplice who Christian works with to retain his cover.  His latest assignment sees him tracking irregularities in a robotics manufacturer. Enter Dana Cummings (Anna Kendrick) an accounts assistant at the firm who discovered them.

The Accountant

There is of course more to the robotics company than meets the eye and suddenly both Christian and Dana’s lives are in danger.  There are plenty of action sequences to keep you on the edge of your seat. Enough punctuating humour to keep you amused and Affleck plays his character well. The movie weaves a number of narratives though it’s run time of just over two hours with enough mystery to keep you guessing. I won’t give away too much because its well worth a watch.

The Accountant is a fresh take on the traditional Hollywood blockbuster. Strong performances from the leads; Ben Affleck as the stoic and socially awkward Christian and Anna Kendrick as the quirky sidekick who adds touches of humor.  I’m giving it 3.5 out of 4.
