Madina Desi Curry – Surprisingly Good

image_6From the outside, nothing about Madina Desi Curry Co really says ‘come on in and get some good quality food’.  It looks cheap and cheerful so expectations were not high.  I had picked up a GrabOne voucher for €10 offering a ‘Curry in a Hurry’ meal for two with rice and soft drinks. I figured it would do for a cheap lunch around town after a few pints. It’s usually €9.95 each so it was a bargain.

They actually have quite a collection of positive reviews. Listed in The Dubliner top 100 restaurants in both 2009 and 2010. Also a glowing report from Herald.ie and a lot of good comments on Trip Advisor.

I visited on a Saturday afternoon and it was quite busy.  It was actually full of mainly Indian people, which according to legend, is always a good sign if natives of the country eat there.  The interior is nothing special, split over two levels, its café style tables and chairs and a large open kitchen so you can see everything being prepared.  The place does feel as though it could do with a belt of a JCloth and some Mr. Muscle.

But on to the food. I didn’t have great expectations despite all the great reviews.  ‘Curry in a Hurry’ did not look great on the plate. It’s not that my photos are just really rubbish, the dish actually looked like that. They could do with some presentation skills advice STAT!!  There was far too much rice and not enough sauce. I opted for the mild Chicken Curry and H opted for the Spicy version.

Spicy Version

I was however proved wrong in terms of taste.  It was bloody gorgeous. It actually took a while to appear on the table but when it did the chicken, a mix of breast and on the bone, was cooked to perfection and so tasty, as was the sauce.  It’s a shame it just didn’t look great.  I tasted the spicy version also which was a bit too fire in the mouth for my liking.  As you can see the rice serving is more than ample.

We also went for a side order of Tarkha Dall which was equally as tasty and some of the best peshwari naan I have ever had.

We also tried a side dish of the Tikka Masala sauce which was equally good. In terms of taste Madina Desi are producing some great food but they really need to give the place a bit of a scrub. I’d still go back though!!

Their chips I have to say are excellent.  Proper homemade chips like your mother makes, none of that god awful frozen chips carry on. You can eat in or take away. I opted to eat in. The chips were perfectly cooked, not too greasy and a liberal portion too with lashings of salt and vinegar. They were very satisfying.

Fresh Cod & Chips

The fresh cod was plump I have to say and the batter was less greasy and more light which is always welcome.  The fish itself however while tasty enough was a little more dry than it was flaky. A slice of lemon on the side while eating in would be a welcome addition.  It was no Fish Shop !

Fresh Cod & Chips

Do they deserve the best chipper in Dublin? I’m not entirely sure. The staff were friendly the chips were great and there was a steady stream of people in and out and footfall says a lot.  If I’m in the area again I’ll happily take a bag of chips.

Pixels & Palates at Cooks Academy

F_ImageI recently had the pleasure of attending a fantastic event in Cooks Academy called Pixels and Palates.  It was a brilliant fusion of food and technology.  They are celebrating 10 years of turning the nation into confidant cooks.  I spent a week with  them myself so can certainly vouch for their expertise. I’m now a master of filleting a fish.  You can read about  my experience here.

They have very kindly given me a discount code which you can use to book any of their short courses. A whopping 20% off!!!!!!!  The offer is valid for all courses booked up to 31st of March 2015. The course itself can take place after this date provided its booked in advance.  The code to use is eatdri365 and you can use it for online bookings or quote it over the phone if making a booking that way.

A full list of the short courses can be found here and there is something for everyone.

The evening itself was really great fun and I had the chance to meet many fellow bloggers from the worlds of food and social media.  We were fed and watered to within an inch of our life and they also had a great competition on the night to win a one month cookery course (valued at €2,950). The task was to turn some turkey and ham based dishes into a credible portion of street food. There were some great creations I have to say.  Here is mine.

The Hen House – Chicken Lovers Paradise

image_1 (2)

The Hen House

The Hen House is in DunLaoghaire. It’s chicken lover heaven. I’d picked up a GrabOne voucher back in September for it.  Two courses from their A La Carte menu for €24.  Pretty decent offer I have to say. It’s quite a large space and has quite a good variety of table configurations including banquets and circular booths.

We visited early (5 p.m.) on a Thursday evening.  As they only open at 5 it was extremely quiet. We were promptly seated by the window, perfect for some people watching as it’s on a busy walk way facing out to the harbour. The menus of course have their cute little chicken logo.

image_4

Menu

We both went for the Hen House Wings (usually €6.95).  Mine the honey sesame which were exactly how I expected them to be.  Tasty and sticky and quite a decent portion size too.

image_1

Honey Sesame Wings

The other wings were described as Fiery Hot.  Alas they fell far short of the mark and instead of being fiery hot they were only luke warm.  Again a good size portion but if heat is your thing in a wing then these will leave you out in the cold.

For drinks we opted for a bottle of Chilean Sav Blanc called El Caminador keenly priced at €22.50.  I’d had it before in Mulberry Garden and loved it. It was equally good here and actually €1.50 cheaper too.

For main course he went for the Hen House take on chicken supreme (€18.95).  It was wood grilled in citrus and served on herb crushed baby potatoes.  It came with two different types of sauce. Butternut squash and carrot puree and mustard and tarragon along with some (very) crispy pancetta and green beans.  It was quite a large plate of food, but it also came with a size order of seasonal vegetables too.  It would have been ample enough on its own but who is going to turn their nose up at extra food!

Both sauces were very tasty.  I particularly liked the mustard and tarragon one and kept dipping my chips into it. The chicken was tender and moist and the citrus flavours had really seeped into it so every bite had a nice tang off it.  The herb baby potatoes, which I’m a fan of were just gorgeous.

I went for the Fried Buttermilk Chicken (€15.95) for my main course. It was marinated in thyme and served with chive coleslaw, chips and Jalapeno honey dip. I love buttermilk chicken. I could eat it by the bucket load (and may have before). It was perfect for me.  It had a nice crisp to it without being crackling in nature.  With buttermilk chicken the longer you marinate it for the better it comes out.  I’m going to go out on a limb and say they marinated it for quite a while because it was gorgeous.

image_12 (2)

Fried Buttermilk Chicken

The chips while perfectly fine and edible did let it down a bit.  They were the usual frozen chips you see in so many places these days.  I can’t help but think hand cooked ‘real’ chips would accompany the chicken so much better.

image

Fried Buttermilk Chicken & Thyme

The sides were a triumph for me.  I very rarely eat coleslaw.  This one however was a feast for the taste-buds. I loved the addition of red onion and chives to it. The Jalapeno honey dip was nice and fiery and probably should have been the sauce for those Fiery Hot wings I mentioned earlier.

image_11 (2)

Chive Coleslaw

The Hen House has lots of little touches that make it a nice place to dine. It’s inviting and the service was excellent. It has the potential to be a really great hangout kind of place which caters to all types of people. I think I would like to go back maybe a little later in the evening when its busier and see what kind of buzz it has then.

La Mere Zou – French Bistro Dining

logoMy friend R had been to La Mere Zou to try out their early bird menu before and gave a glowing report of the value to be had. We were both heading to a wine tasting event in Ely IFSC so decided to call into La Mere Zou for a quick bite before hand.

Image stolen from the Web

Image stolen from the Web

It’s a basement restaurant on Stephens Green and the early bird runs Monday to Saturday from 5.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. It’s fantastic value at 3 courses for €25. It’s a cosy space in the style of a French bistro and clearly very popular as it filled up quickly.

We were greeted warmly by Gosia and shown to a great table with plenty of space. Usually if I know in advance where I’m going to eat I have a look at the menu online.  On arrival the very friendly French waitress (from Paris) pointed us to the blackboard above our heads which had a list of additional dishes which were on offer.  Some had a small surcharge to be included in the early bird offer.  All very reasonable I have to say.

I opted for the watercress and bacon soup.  Quite a large bowl arrived and it was rich and creamy and tasty.  After a few spoonfuls I realised there wasn’t a hint of bacon off it.  I wasn’t sure if it was due to my tastebuds being dulled by the cocktails I had before dinner or not.  I did mention it to the waitress who promptly relayed it back to the kitchen.  There was an error with the order and the bacon was missing.

They could not have been more apologetic for the mishap and I had eaten so much at that point there was no need to replace it.  In lieu of a replacement two glasses of Prosecco appeared on the table. I really couldn’t have asked them to handle it any better.  It was a minor blip and who on earth would choose bacon over Prosecco anyway.

image_12

Watercress and Bacon Soup

R had the chicken liver parfait. Beautifully presented and quite an ample size.  Served with sourdough bread on the side.  I’ve never liked chicken liver I have to say but R ate it all, including a second helping of sourdough which was quickly made available when asked.

image_5

Chicken Liver Parfait

For main course I went with roasted chicken supreme which was served with pearl barley and vegetable broth.  Tender moist chicken and plenty of it. The vegetable broth was warming and flavorsome A very Autumn/Winter dish.

Roasted Chicken Supreme

R had the slow cooked venison shank with honey roasted root vegetables, pomme purée and red wine sauce. I really wish my picture was better because the dish was gorgeous to look at and even better to taste.  The venison was so tender and the red wine sauce thick and rich. Out of the two mains this one was the clear winner and I’ll be having it when I return.

Venison Shank

Desserts were next and I opted for warm carrot cake, orange curd, and ginger bread ice cream with walnuts. I love carrot cake and this didn’t disappoint. Moist enough with a slightly crisp top.  I would have liked a bit more ice cream with it though.

Carrot Cake

R had the classic crème brûlée served with a sugar snap tuile. Crisp caramel top with creamy vanilla custard.  I would expect it to be hard for a French restaurant to get it wrong. They didn’t I’m happy to report.

La Mere Zou has plenty to offer.  It’s a great location. It’s great value. The staff are friendly and welcoming and they change their menu to suit what’s available seasonally.  I’d be happy to return.

Beeftro – Lunch At The Right Price

IMG_5044.JPG
The name Beeftro has been on the lips of many so I figured since they were opening a new branch on Balfe Street I’d make it my business to visit. They opened to the public Monday. A soft opening I’m told with still a few bits and pieces to iron out. I visited Wednesday lunchtime.

I really like the interior I have to say. It’s classy but reminds me of an old style butchers at the same time. It might be the tiled walls that has put that in my head. Either way I like it.

The grill is open for all to see so you know the chefs are confidant in their food. There is a large upstairs with luxurious leather seating around the sides. Downstairs there are two further dining areas which I believe our host said will be available for private parties in due course.
IMG_5045.JPG

IMG_5046.JPG

As it was lunch and we only had an hour the focus was on the lunch time specials.

IMG_5049.JPG
I opted for the open steak sandwich while R went for warm lemon roast chicken.

IMG_5043.JPG
Mine was served on toasted bread with sauté mushrooms, red onion, rocket, garlic butter and fries. The steak was tender and cooked exactly the way I asked which was medium well. The mushrooms were juicy and the chips a slight crisp which I would expect.

IMG_5040.JPG

IMG_5041.JPG
The lemon roast chicken was succulent and full of flavour. It was served on a grilled flat bread with avocado and sour cream. Deliciously light but quite filling.

IMG_5042.JPG

IMG_5047.JPG
The service was excellent, the surrounds were comfortable and the welcome was warm. While it was not very busy with diners when I was there I suspect Beeftro will fast become a popular lunch spot once word gets out the doors are open. I don’t doubt that I will be returning to Beeftro and am very much looking forward to tucking into their dinner menu.

Merrion Square Market

Logo

I had heard great reports about the Merrion Square Market from plenty of people.  Even though its only a ten minute walk from work I only recently managed to visit. The market is run by Irish Village Markets (Twitter:@LunchtimeMarket) which run markets on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in various locations such as Eastpoint, Stillorgan, Grand Canal and Spencer Dock.

Merrion Square is run on Thursdays between 11.30 and 2.00 p.m.  It was in full swing when I arrived about 1.30 p.m. and I can’t help thinking it might be worth their while extending the opening hours to 2.30 p.m. instead.  That extra half hour might be quite lucrative as there are plenty of people who take staggered lunches and are looking for something tasty and differant to the usual plain sandwiches.

There are plenty of market stalls to choose from at the market with something to cater for everyones taste.  I didn’t get a lot of time to sample the foods unfortunately but have a run down of some of the stalls below.

Mulberry Garden Tasting Menu

Hidden down Mulberry Lane in the grounds of a cottage dating back to 1911 you will find the unassuming but brightly coloured doorway to Mullberry Garden.

Taken from www.mulberrygarden.ie

Taken from www.mulberrygarden.ie

The restaurant opened in 2011 and is only open to the public Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 6p.m. for dinner.  It is also available for private hire outside of these times. I was invited as a guest to try out the Tasting Menu on a Thursday evening.  The chef, a very talented Tom Doyle changes the menu every week.  Tom emails the new menu out to customers in advance (subscriber list), and it’s not just a five line email either.  He takes the time to describe each dish, the inspiration behind them and where the ingredients are sourced, all locally I might add.  I don’t know of any other restaurant which has a chef going to that level of detail.  Having met him during my visit, his passion for his menu’s comes across very clearly, not to mention his friendly and engaging nature. He loves food and every dish is laced with that love.

On arrival we were greeted by Claudio who settled us in the outdoor area of Mulberry Garden. It happened to be a lovely evening out and garden area which is courtyard style with the restaurant wrapping around it was the perfect place to sit back relax and unwind before dinner.

I opted for the Green Pear which is made with Chartreuse, fresh basil, lemon juice and fresh pear. H opted for the Mulberry Kick which is their signature cocktail, made of infused vanilla vodka, fresh lemon, pomegrante and blueberry juice served in their glass within a glass. Both were refreshing and a great way to start off the evening.

Something quite nice about how they welcome guests is the fact that you are not rushed in and out. You can visit early and relax with drinks and then be shown to your table for dinner and you are also welcome to retire back to the courtyard after dinner to continue your evening. It didn’t have that feel of just filling a time slot for two hours before you are sent on your way.  It’s leisurely dining.

After cocktails we were shown to our table to begin the indulgence that would be our culinary journey for the evening. We kicked off with some fresh baked bread with herb butter which was excellent.

Then came an off menu extra of baked potato skins with piped chicken liver parfait which was delivered to the table on a stone. Bite sized crips skins with rich creamy parfait.

The first dish on the official tasting menu was described as Local Cabbage.  I’m not sure the name done it justice.  The Art of Cabbage may have been more suitable. The dish was a variety of types of cabbage coupled with Oysters.  I have to admit I’m not an oyster fan and having a farming background I’m quite familliar with a few varieties of cabbage. Let me tell you, this was not cabbage boiled to within an inch of its life.  It was fresh, tasty and the differant textures worked very well. The roughness of the savoy was offset nicely by the sweetness of the Kohlrabi.  Who knew cabbage existed without being accommpanied by a lump of salty bacon.

Local Cabbage

Local Cabbage

This was followed by Glazed Ox Cheek with local beetroot, tarragon, spiced bread crumbs and beet leaves. The Ox cheek, if I remember correctly was slow cooked for hours to make it melt in the mouth tender. I know it was a tasting menu but I absolutely wanted more of this.  It was delicious.

Glazed Ox Cheek

Glazed Ox Cheek – No Filter

Not to be out done by those on land, representing the sea we tucked into Roast Cod Loin with potato, brown shrimp, trompettes (mushrooms), chard leaf, baked potato and bacon foam with a citrus herb oil. Again some great textures.  Soft flaked cod with the more chewy nature of the brown shrimp. I actually could taste the bacon off the foam, but I’m not a big fan of the whole foam movement I have to say. At this point it was one all between the land and the sea. Both great dishes.

Roast Cod Loin

Roast Cod Loin – No Filter

Next came Free Range Chicken with smoked potato mouse, tarragon oil, confit wing, grilled leek and roasting jus. In fairness chicken sounded a little dull against the ox and cod but I’m happy to report it was not the case at all.  Perfectly cooked.  Extremely tasty.  That wirey looking creation in the middle was actually fried leek root and quite nice. Never thought I’d be saying that. The smoked potato mouse was soft, creamy and not overly filling (in a good way).

Free Range Chicken

Free Range Chicken

Moving onto the dessert section of the menu we were presented with Poached Plums, plum jelly, vanilla cream, biscuit crumb and star anise ice-cream. You can from the picture below it was presented beautifully. I’ve never had a poached plum before and while I did absolutely enjoy them, I probably wouldn’t count them among my must have again desserts, but that is a personal choice.  The star anise ice-cream I’m happy to say was not too overpowering and the smooth cream vanilla with the biscuit crumb worked exceptionally well.

Poached Plums

While working our way through the menu we shared a bottle of Chilean Sav Blanc (€24). By share I mean I drank most of it as H was designated driver. I’m no wine connoisseur and tend to stick to white wine myself but the wine list appears to have been chosen carefully and has a red and white selection to suit every taste and wallet.

El Caminador

To finish off the evening we chose from the selection of hand crafted Irish cheeses. They were served on a large wooden board with honeyed walnuts, mustard pickled vegetables, caraway crackers and the biggest pot of honey I’ve ever seen.

To sum it up I would describe Mulberry Garden as fine dining without the rigidness that often accompanies it. We spent three and half hours in the surrounds of this restaurant. That is leisurely, enjoyable dining without question.  The service was impeccable. Anna described every dish to us as she delivered it to the table. Claudio was an excellent host and Tom who took the time to visit around the various tables and have a chat with the diners.  The tasting menu is priced at €60 per person, and I consider that great value considering the range of food on offer, the service and the enjoyable atmosphere.  I will be returning again without question. This is probably one of my most positive reviews (and I am a newbie blogger) to date and well deserved.

*As we were guests for the evening food was complimentary, the drinks we covered ourselves. The review is fair and honest of the experience I had*
