Hot Pursuit – Movie Review

I wanted to like this. I wanted to laugh lots and I wanted to rave about it to other people and say things like ‘the funniest bit was when’; but I can’t say that. I didn’t like it, I didn’t laugh and I don’t really recommend it to anyone.

Directed by Anne Fletcher (The Guilt Trip, 27 Dresses, Step Up, The Proposal) Hot Pursuit stars Reese Witherspoon as Cooper, a police officer confined to the evidence room, a far cry from the legacy of her esteemed policeman father.  Her intense overbearing personality gets in the way of any romantic connections  and she is itching to get a chance to prove her worth career wise. Her day finally comes with the chance to escort a witness to Dallas.

Sofia Vergara plays Ms. Riva, the wife of cartel informant Felipe who is headed to Dallas to testify against cartel leader Vincente Cortez. As is always the case, nothing goes to plan. Cooper’s partner on the transfer and Felipe end up dead and she and Ms. Riva hit the road in an attempt to get away.

There is an eventual twist in the movie, which is alas, very poorly scripted  and carried out. What should be a fun filled two girls on the run movie is low on laughs, feels long and is lacking in any kind of chemistry between the two leads. At one point I thought to myself ‘Christ both their voices are going through my head’.  Hot Pursuit, in theory should work, but in reality is much more of a lukewarm chase that goes on way too long.

With little good to say I’ll keep this review short and let you make up your own mind.  For me it was 1.5 out of 5, but check out the trailer below and feel free to make up your own mind.
