Sometimes you just need steak. I have a friend who has steak every Friday night. It could be Monday morning and he would be talking about his pending Friday night steak with a glass of wine. Steak and wine are like the Cagney and Lacey of food and FX Buckley has them both. They have a number of locations throughout the city such as Parkgate Street, Crow Street, Monkstown, The Bull and Castle and Pembroke street, which is where I sat myself for a steak lunch. Lunch specials range from €12 for a chicken caesar salad (now who would order that in a steakhouse, shame on you) up to €20 for the 8oz sirloin steak.
My buddy went with the 8oz flat-iron steak (€14.50) which comes with a choice of beef dripping chips, spring onion mash or salad. Naturally he veered away from the salad, discounted the spring onion mash and settled on chips. There is also a choice of sauces, peppercorn, Béarnaise, red wine jus or garlic butter. Béarnaise was promptly chosen.
The steaks are cooked to order and from our experience they are cooked exactly as asked. The flat-iron was actually two fairly hefty cuts of succulent beef which to use a cliché as old as time (there’s another), was melt in the mouth. Naturally I had to slice off a bit to taste for research purposes. The Béarnaise was light yellow, smooth and creamy and the perfect match to the steak and chips.
I opted for the steak sandwich (€12.50). Again cooked to order, I went medium. It was served on a brioche roll, soft inside with a light crisp top and garnished with onion, rocket, tomato, garlic horseradish mayo and pepper sauce. It also came with a side of beef dripping chips. I’m a fan of the simple and tasty steak sandwich and am happy to report that the folks at FX Buckley are serving up a great one. It’s also a decent size cut of steak on it too. No sparing on ingredients with these guys. Would I go back? A resounding yes. Will it be soon, I suspect so and I’m thinking for a slap up steak dinner this time. They also have a great selection of wine on offer in their steakhouses so your are not forgotten in that area either. We had a glass of red each with our lunch and I can’t for the life of me remember what. I was probably too busy eating.
