Throughout the year Lidl tend to have a number of wine festival sales. Their most recent offerings cover Iberia, France and Italy. I missed a recent tasting, but I picked out two Lidl red wines from the list and they kindly sent me samples for review purposes. The scheduled dates for each wine region to his shelves are listed below. I picked a Spanish and a Portuguese red to try out.
- Iberian Monday April 30th
- French Monday June 11th
- Italian Monday July 23rd
Torre de Ferro Reserva Dão – Portugal 2015
The Dão-Lafões territory is in the Centre Region of Portugal between the coast and the hinterland of the country. The region has developed among mountain zones and valleys with gentle slopes and hills. Climate wise, its cold and rainy in Winter with dry hot Summers. The grapes grown here are mainly mix of Touriga Nacional, Jaen and Tinta Roriz.
Priced at only €7.99 with a 13.5% abv, this is very enjoyable wine in its category. As is typical of the region the wine is made with Touriga Nacional, Jaen and Tinta Roriz. Rich in colour with dense dark fruits like black currants and plums. Also hints of tobacco and spice. Its well-balanced and has a pleasing mouthfeel.
It will pair well with beef or lamb or for something quick and easy it goes well with a pizza, which is exactly how I had it. Great wine so keep an eye in store for remaining stock.
Navarra DO Reserva – Spain 2012
The Navarra DO is in the Navarre region in the north of Spain. The regions vineyards can be found on the lower slopes of the Pyrenees and the climate is continental. In terms of grapes the most common in the region are Garnacha, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
The second red, also priced at €7.99 comes from this region. Dark ruby-red in colour with balanced tannin’s. Hints of chocolate and vanilla followed by black fruits and some spice. Ideal for pairing with barbecue food and perfectly fine to drink on its own too.
