Eco 2 Run – 20 Mile Run 2014

Having finished my first half marathon and not ending up in a wheelchair I got to thinking that I could give a full marathon a shot.  So along with him-indoors and a buddy we decided we would all take a trip to Venice and run the 28th Venice Marathon in October.  Sure why not.  Besides the Dublin Marathon was far too common. The Italians are known for their style so I could only assume their marathon would be a glitzy affair.

Within a few weeks of deciding to do it him-indoors was complaining of ankle trouble. To be fair he was walking like John Wayne. A few trips to the doctor later and he was officially out of the running for Venice.  Meanwhile my other buddy was complaining of hip problems.  I assumed it was because he walked with a mince. True story he does and apparently never knew until I pointed it out. It’s a walk that says ‘hello boys’. His American Indian name would be ‘Walks with Mince’.

Stress Fracture

As it turned out his hips were out of line because he used to sit on his leg as a child, oh and he had a stress fracture in his leg.  A stress fracture is like the poor relation of a real fracture.  Not quite a fracture but serious enough to curtail your running.  So that was him out too.  They did both decide that a holiday in Venice would still be fun and would support me as the Lone Runner.

Lone Runner

Training for Venice kicked in.  A lovely colour coded marathon training plan was created full of ambition and dreams of running stardom.  It was created with the help of a great book by Hal Higdon called Marathon. My stress fracture (mincer) buddy gave me a loan of it. Another runner had recommended it to him.  See lovely bunch runners, couldn’t be more helpful and all about sharing secrets.  I’ll throw out some personal thoughts on marathon plans and what distance to train to in a later post.  The book said I should train to a maximum of 20 miles and no more.  The actual marathon would be 26 miles.  That’s another six miles I’m somehow pulling out of the running bag on the day.  Better be a big bloody bag.

Marathon Book

Marathon by Hal Higdon

As a pre marathon goal and to bench mark my progress I signed up to the Eco 2 Run 20 mile run which was taking place on September 29th in Dublin.  If I could do that then I could run Venice a month later. That was the plan.   My training for it was up and down. Good weeks where I ran my ass off and bad weeks where I sat my ass off on the couch. Again I found myself thinking how far exactly is 20 miles.  So anytime I went somewhere (in the car) I was keeping an eye on how far I had driven.  I very quickly realised how far it was.  It was VERY FAR.  It was far driving never mind actually running it.  I had signed up and told people I was doing it so I couldn’t exactly back out.  Loss of face will win every time over loss of the use of my legs due to running ridiculous lengths.  So I was committed to this 20 miler.

I trained as much as I could (blatant lie I did not I was lazy loads) for it and turned up on the day. I had done all my pre race checks the night before. Things like make sure I had my running playlist and enough of the gel bars I liked (Banana Blast) to get me through.  In keeping with my very girlie (no offense girls) obsession in ensuring my shorts and top matched I decided on white shorts with a red top and white socks with a red trim.  In the event I got tired and couldn’t run any further I had great faith that my matching outfit would be enough to push me forward across the finish line. I’m only smiling because I haven’t run yet.

The Race Hasn’t Started Yet

I’m hiding near the back of that group of people.

Start Line

The turnout for the race was much smaller than I had thought it would be. It was in the hundreds rather than in the thousands. The course consisted of four identical laps around an area of Dublin Port. (See course route pic below).  In terms of running through a scenic area and getting to see the city the course unfortunately failed on all accounts.

Eco2Run_Route_2012

Course Route

I found this course to be particularly difficult for a number of reasons.

1 – Running the same four laps can become quite boring.

2 – The route was quite industrial so there wasn’t really much to look at.

3 – The number of people running as mentioned was much smaller than previous runs which meant there were stretches of the course were I found myself running completely on my own. I was used to having fellow runners beside, in front and behind me.  If there was no-one in front I had no-one to chase after and if there was no-one behind I had no-one to try and keep a head of.

4 – The smaller number of people running meant there was a small spectator group cheering us on. I’ve said it before but it really is quite amazing how cheers from complete strangers can spur you on.

On the last lap my hips were killing me.  My feet were fine. My hydration was fine. I’d gone through enough gel bars to feed a small country and I wasn’t really that tired. But the hips, Jesus they were sore. I’m rubbish at stretching before and after training and when I actually do, hips never come into it.  I just assumed they do their own thing and they are one body part I don’t have to bother about. WRONG!!!! WRONG!!!  My hips were sore and I was struggling along with an outlandish kind of stride which was a mix between looking at someone who needed to use the toilet and someone who wanted to cry due to pain.

HipsDontLie

Nevertheless I got stuck into the last lap and despite the HIPS I managed quite a respectable time.  Actually no, I completely amazed myself.  I came across the line in 03:20:59 Not too shabby at all and much faster that I thought I would.  The chip time worked out to be 03.20.30 (not much of a differance)

Tortured Look

There wasn’t a medal in sight that I could flash around later in the pub but there were some bottles of water and bananas so I got stuck into them.  My hips were actually in bits for a good 7-8 days after that race.  Like any sensible person I immediately Googled hip pain and self diagnosed myself with two hip fractures and took to the bed.  I did also seek some advice from someone more qualified than Google and now am an avid ‘hip stretcher’. I’d go as far as to say I’d give Shakira a run for her money. Next stop Venice Marathon!

The Brick House – Tapas At Skerries Harbour

Located along the harbour in Skerries The Brick House is a tapas bar and restaurant with stunning views of the harbour. I recently seen it advertised on GrabOne with an offer of four tapas and two glasses of wine for €19. Seeing as I live in the town I figured it was the perfect excuse to try it out.

The restaurant is split over two floors of what was once a residential building.   Downstairs there is a small bar to the left as you walk in and to the right is an bright open dining space. There is also an open fire which I can only imagine is the perfect place to sit on a cold day looking out to the sea. As it turned out it was a fairly mild day when I visited but they had the fire roaring anyway. Upstairs is split into three sections. A large dining space to the front by the windows and two smaller sections either side of the stairs towards the back.

Myself and himself were promptly seated by a friendly waitress at a table by the window. To be honest I don’t know a lot about tapas (despite owning a still in its wrapper tapas cookbook for about 3 years) but I do know they are of Spanish origin. You can find out a bit more about tapas here. The tapas menu was quite extensive and dishes ranged from €4 for the simplest such as Sundried Tomatoes up to €11 for Pil Pil Prawns.

We ordered four of the dishes to share. The Pil Pil Prawns, Steak Bites with Pepper Sauce, Chips N’ Dips ( Jalapeno, Ranchero, Tomato Salsa and Cheese Sauce) and Spicy Chicken Wings with Blue Cheese Dip. Although the voucher didn’t specify it, it turned out that some of the dishes had a supplement charge on them. Typically it included two of the dishes I chose. A supplement of €1 on the Steak Bites and €3 on The Pil Pil Prawns. We also went for a side order of bread with garlic mayo and a glass of house white (sav blanc) and house red (merlot).

The bread was light and tasty and obviously freshly baked and the accompanying dip was probably one of the best garlic mayos I ever tried.

I wasn’t sure what to expect with the Chips N’ Dips being a tapas novice but it was of course Tortilla chips with dips and a sizeable portion at that too.

The Steak Bites were tender and cooked to a light pink. The pepper sauce however which came with it lacked flavour and was actually quite bland.  The portion size again was quite good.

The Pil Pil Prawns were served with garlic and chili and cooked to perfection.

The Spicy Chicken Wings were heavy on a taste of vinegar but light on the taste of spice. They were the only disappointment of the meal.

The two inclusive glasses of wine washed everything down nicely. The white crisp and fruity and the red smooth and full bodied.  Including the supplements on two dishes and the cost of the voucher the overall bill came to €24 which to my mind was great value.

On a sunny day this is one great spot!

Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin 2014

My goal when I started running was to run 5K. I hit it and wanted more. The new goal was to run 10K. I hit that and wanted more. Running is addictive and psychologically 5k increments are very doable. What about a half marathon though. That would be over double anything I had run before. It wasn’t just another 5k.  Continue reading

Titanic Tours – A Fans Journey of the Exhibitions

I have to admit I’m a bit of an all things Titanic fan. Ever since I was a kid I’d been fascinated by it. I remember watching the movie Raise the Titanic in my grandmothers and thinking it was amazing.  It wasn’t until years later that I found out the ship was actually split in two and would never be raised at all.  It was terribly upsetting to discover.  Damn you Hollywood and your lies and your snappy movie tag line of ‘They’ve Found The Titanic, There’s Just One Thing Left To Do’. Lies all lies, it will never be raised. Continue reading

Fire Bar & Lounge – Cocktails

I walked by their newly refurbished cocktail lounge many times always with the intention of calling in. On a boozy Saturday afternoon myself and a buddy decided to drop in and try out their cocktail menu.

Fire Lounge takes up prime position along the front of the Mansion House with floor to ceiling windows offering the perfect spot for a bit of people watching on Dawson Street.  It was relatively early in the afternoon so it was pretty quiet.

The interior was a bit bright for my liking, but again it was earlyish.  Rather than feeling funky and cosy it felt more high class hotel lobby, which I suppose is no bad thing.

We claimed a few seats by the window and go stuck into the cocktail menu with a view to sampling a couple of rounds. Price wise they were fairly standard for Dawson Street, coming in at about €12 each.

First up was a classic Mojito. I love them and they just shout refreshing, if made correctly that is. Credit where its due, Fire done a stellar job making it. Lots of really fresh mint and lime and just the right amount of alcohol to make it hit the mouth with a bite.

4

Next came a Razmopolitan and an Envy.  Both looked stunning and tasted great.  To be honest I was far too bleary eyed to remember much more about them but at the time I do remember rolling my eyes and whispering ‘devine’.

A round of these bad boys came next and I have no idea what they were. They were alochol loaded ‘manly’ red drinks with a little fruit allotment on top of them. DELISH!

Although we weren’t actually there that long, just over an hour or so I think, they even fed us! A slap up meal of mixed nuts which were promptly washed down by the aforementioned assortment of cocktails. I’d happily go back, but perhaps later in the evening when it’s in full swing.

Switching Off at Roundwood Country House

Sometimes on my lunch break my mind wanders to planning a weekend away so I hit the net to see what interesting spots I can find.  That was how I stumbled across the absolute gem that is Roundwood House. I promptly contacted them and made a booking for a Saturday night. for myself and himself. Continue reading

Samsung Night Run 2014

Having completed my first 5k run run I was hungry for more.  I needed  a new goal to keep me motivated. Myself, Him-indoors and a buddy (the one who introduced me to running) signed up for the Samsung Night Run. A 10k run through the streets of Dublin at night. Continue reading

Le Bon Crubeen – Talbot Street

I had seen the name Le Bon Crubeen crop up in reviews in newspapers and magazines and once or twice it came up on a groupon site. To be honest I’ve never really thought of Talbot Street as a dining destination. When I think of Talbot Street I think of when I was a kid going to buy wallpaper with my mother in Gerry Keanes, or should I say going to carry wallpaper home. And of course not forgetting the shopping highlight that is Michael Guineys.

Inside

From Le Bon Crubeen Website

The interior of the restaurant is nothing like you would expect. It is warm and inviting with a large bar running down one side.  It’s also divided into sections which afford you a bit of privacy.  Off the main dining area there is another room and then another section upstairs.  It’s comfortable and well laid out, well apart from the toilets which are a bit of a trek down towards the kitchen, but then again, when you do get to them, they are quite fancy indeed.  Hand lotions and little towels to dry your hands and spotless clean.

SEATS

From Le Bon Crubeen Website

It as about 5.30 on a Saturday evening when we stopped by to try it out. Although we didn’t have a booking they were happy to seat us with the proviso we vacate the table by 7.30.  Menu’s were promptly given and the staff were efficient and friendly.  We had a great little corner just to the left of the door, perfect for when you want to have a bit of time to yourself.

Getting priorities right we put in a drink order.  I drink white and he drinks red so the only solution is a bottle each, so thats exactly what we ordered.  To be honest we were both gasping for a drink and weren’t overly bothered about what it was. The white, a French Sav Blanc was fresh and fruity at €26. The red, an Argentinian Malbec I’m told was smooth with hints of blackcurrant at €26.

Wine

Red & White Wine

We opted for the Early Bird/Pre Theatre Menu which was two courses for €19.95 or three courses for €21.95.

Menu

Early Bird Menu

For mains I went with Lemon and Thyme Infused Chicken Supreme served with Bubble and Squeak and Sweetcorn Puree with green beans. The chicken was moist and tender but maybe a little dull to the tastebuds. The Bubble and Squeak however was a bit on the dry side but still edible. The beans and puree were a good match and I cleaned my plate.

Himself went for the Dry Aged 8oz Steak ‘Au Poivre’ (€5 supplement) with Slow Roasted Tomato, Watercress, Chunky Chips and Peppercorn Sauce.  Now that all sounds quite appealing to me.  The delivery of it however was very disappointing, as you can see from the picture below.  The Slow Roasted Tomato and Watercress were a little limp to say the least. The steak was all quite fatty, but was cooked as requested which was blue. Overall it didn’t quite hit the mark.

Desserts I’m happy to report faired out much better. Mine, White Chocolate and Raspberry Cheesecake with Tequila and Lime ice-cream. Three words to describe it. DELISH – PLATE CLEANED.

His was the Choc Chip Bread and Butter Pudding with Creme Anglaise. Also a winner and the plate was cleaned.

As it turned out, himself knew the manager Mark (quite a character, in a good way) so we were treated to a complimentary cheese platter and delicious cocktails. A perfect end to the evening. I won’t lie we were slightly tipsy leaving. All in all the bill came to about €98 which when you consider half of it was made up of bottles of wine it’s not too bad.
