Nautical Night – Its All In The Details

Note: more about the prep for a Nautical Themed Night

A buddy of mine had celebrated his birthday (30 something) and after one too many drinks I suggested that I’d have a little dinner party for him.  Always up for having some fun I decided to make it a Nautical Themed Dinner Party.  Any excuse to dress stupid, drink too much and laugh at myself.

So I assembled a select group of people, all of which I knew would make the effort to dress up and get into the swings of things. An invite was cobbled together and swiftly texted around (much quicker).

The date was set and as it was a Nautical Themed night I sent out boarding cards to the guests in advance.  No boarding card no entry was the rule. I enjoy throwing in lots of little details when organising a themed bash.

Next up was the menu which again followed the theme and as the birthday boy was a vegetarian, fish was the way to go.

All that was left was to throw a few nautical decorations around the house.  For the craic, and in my head it was much easier to do, I decided to cut up white bed sheets and create sails on the roof of the kitchen.  It bloody took about an hour and the aftermath is a whole lot of thumb tack holes in my kitchen ceiling.

I also managed to source a few blow up finding Nemo’s which were promptly added to the ceiling, along with some paper lanterns. The table was set with my finest bone china (Ikea) and I had wrapped the cutlery in napkins tied with bits of string and finished off with a polo mint which looks like a little life buoy. A collection of Penny’s ducks added a little seafaring charm.

For a bit of added detail I commandeered the colour printer in work and made some fish themed wine bottle labels and relabelled the red and white wine.

Having previously visited the Titanic Exhibition in Belfast I also had some great White Star Line beer tankards on hand.

Pinterest is a great source for getting ideas when you are doing anything and it was there I came across the idea of using old jam jars with string and polo mints tied around them to serve cocktails.

I even rolled out the red carpet for the guests on arrival. Only €7 for a party supply store.  The only downside being that you stick it to the floor with tape which does not want to come off the next morning.

Dessert was served in little pirate treausre chests, again from a party supply store with 8 of them for only €3.

As is typical at an Irish dinner party there was a serious amout of beer, wine and cocktails served.  Some of the beer being Titanic themed!

The night ended wild drunk which is no suprise and still in costume ended up in the local pub getting many a sideways glance.

A few pics of some of the guests, all of which made a great effort to dress up.  My favourite being Sarah who called herself De’Bris and had spent the afternoon collecting ‘crap’ from the beach and decorating herself with it.  She even had real crab claws and seaweed and christ did she smell bad.

Competitive Streak – Hello Aware 5k Run

As per my previous posts, I had the gear (click here), I had the technology (click here), now I needed the motivation. My buddy who had introduced me to running was clocking up the kilometres. He was talking about running 5k at a time. I hadn’t even run one yet.  As it turned out I had a competitive streak in me.  Continue reading

Technically Ready to Run

So following on from my first post The Best Dress Non Runner i was now technically ready to run! I decided it would be a good idea to run around the town where I live (nice coastal run). So I donned my flashy new matching running gear, water bottle in hand (one of those grip ones that fit snugly in your hand) and I was ready to run. But wait, how would I know how far I had gone? The Bakehouse – Bachelors Walk

Having heard lots of good things about The Bakehouse I decided to make it my business to take a visit. A no booze Saturday night led to an early start on Sunday morning with a ten o’clock showing of The Wolf of Wall Street (excellent). Suitably starved after three hours of a movie myself and himself (him indoors) headed for brunch. The Bakehouse on Bachelors Walk is a pleasure to behold from first sight. The interior is surprisingly spacious with many a hint of pink. While there were only one or two fellow diners when we arrived, within ten minutes the place was filling with a mix of young and old.

Touch of Pink

The staff in The Bakehouse are some of the nicest I have ever met. The three girls as it turned out were related to the owner and she will be pleased to know they were doing a great job.

The menu is big enough for choice and small enough that you know the chef’s are adept at creating each dish. The soup of the day you will find written on a large mirror running down one side of the cafe. Without hesitation I opted for the Beef Stew which I was advised is served in a bread bowl. Picture a circular loaf of bread hallowed out and filled with stew and that is pretty much it.

I also ordered a glass of the New Zealand Vicars Choice Sav Blanc, which my helpful waitress advised was gorgeous.  You just know she had tried it many times herself and that’s the kind of recommendation I like. As it turned out she wasn’t wrong. It was light and crispy and a perfect relaxer.

My Beef Stew was everything I wanted it to be. It had large tender chunks of beef which melted in my mouth and gave me that warm comfort food feel.  The stew it swam in was full of flavour and right amount of ‘thick’. Despite my best efforts I was far too full to attempt to eat the bread bowl itself.

Himself had the Bakehouse Grill. He is notoriously difficult to please but was quite taken with the grill and despite the ample amount of food on the plate (bacon, egg, sausage, pudding and toast) he managed to eat most of it. The homemade Bakehouse tomato relish I’m told is particularly good.

He opted for the more sensible option of a pot of tea to wash it down. The tea incidentally is loose leaf and comes with one of those dainty little strainers which transform the experience of pouring tea into something more akin to a traditional tea ceremony. It’s these little touches that give The Bakehouse that something extra.

Tea

The staff alone would make me come running back but luckily the food was well able to speak for itself and stood its ground just fine. Oh I should also mention that The Bakehouse is also a bakery and for just €10 they will box up four cakes of your choosing to take away.  It took all the will in the world I had to walk away from the counter.

The Best Dressed Non Runner

Back in April 2013 a buddy suggested running to me as a way to get active and get fit and more importantly to lose the belly.  Someone else had suggested it to him so I guess it’s one of those activities you pass on to others. Continue reading

Hugo’s – Merrion Row

Front RestaurantMy friend T-Shirt Arms (TSA) had celebrated his 40th birthday in Hugo’s back in December.  While he didn’t rave about it he did say it was an enjoyable experience. The complimentary hand lotion in the gents got more airtime than the food but then again he has terribly precious non manual labour hands that need to be regularly moisturised.

As it turned out I had arranged to meet TSA for lunch. The venue I left to him and as luck would have it he booked Hugo’s.  I immediately looked at their website to check the menu (I assume everyone does that).  Having missed breakfast and already been to the gym I was salivating at the offerings on their lunch menu.

It was close enough after Christmas for them to still have twinkling lights in the window which gave a festive feel on a cold day.  I had arrived slightly before TSA and was promptly seated by the friendly staff.  I did happen to notice a rail of coats which I assume is for customers but nobody offered to take mine.  Then again, I didn’t ask either!  The interior was warm and welcoming with dark woods and simple but elegant table dressing.  Hugo’s is not so big that it feels empty of character but not small enough that it feels cramped either.

Table

Interior

TSA joined me a few minutes later and we got stuck into catching up.  The eager waiting staff were quick off the mark asking if we were ready to order. I had already decided in advance that I was going to go for their ‘Lunch Boards’ option which consisted of chicken, beef or pork sandwich with a bowl of soup or side order of fries.

Lunch Menu

I went for the chicken and bacon ciabatta with herb mayonnaise and the soup which was celeriac. The soup was the right amount of creamy with a very slight spice to it. There was only a hint of garlic, a bit more would have been nice but none the less it was warm and tasty and perfect for a cold day. The ciabatta was simply delicious.  Lightly toasted and the chicken was tender and moist with just the right amount of herb mayonnaise that it wasn’t too overpowering.

Lunch Board

TSA had the pulled pork with fries (fattie) and although I didn’t manage to get a picture it looked great and an empty plate tells me it must have tasted pretty good.  A round of tea and coffees finished us off nicely. Lunch at Hugo’s was thoroughly enjoyable and great value too.

Out of curiosity I had to visit the bathroom to check out the aforementioned hand lotion.  Turns out it actually was quite nice. A Scottish brand. It would have been nice to see an Irish one but enjoyable none the less if hand lotion is your thing.
