Ugly Duckling Café – Mouthwatering Sandwiches

I was recently the lucky winner of lunch at Ugly Duckling Dublin Café. They actually have two branches in Dublin.  One on Liffey Street in the Epicurean Food Hall and one in Georges Street arcade, which is the one I went to.

So what’s on offer?  Well the owners call them ‘the most innovative, tasty, jaw dropping sandwiches available to mankind’. Me, well if ‘sandwich’ translates to massive main course size plateful of food then yes I’ll go with sandwich.  If you are planning on visiting bring your fat pants coz these sandwiches are filling.

Pittsburgh Sandwich

Pittsburgh Sandwich

My friend opted for the Pittsburgh (usually €7.95). Dear God, look at it, MASSIVE.  Its BBQ pulled pork, BBQ sauce, coleslaw, lettuce, tomato and skinny fries.  Its a mammoth feast and the table beside us were straining their necks to see what it was.  I tried it of course. The BBQ sauce is rich and tasty and the pulled pork very much melt in your mouth.  If you are hungry, this is the sandwich for you.

Mine was the Classic American (€9.95). Its an 8oz, dry aged dexer beef burger with mustard, ketchup, mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickles and cheese (although I went without cheese).  All that is served on a steamed brioche bun with skinny fries (the only thing skinny after eating it). Again it was a mega mouthful of food.

The cafe itself is small enough with a kitchen area and counter running down one side and seats to the front and back.  The service was excellent, the staff were friendly and we left more than full. Would I go back, yes I would.
